I’ve always been fascinated by how hair and makeup contributes to storytelling, something I became even more aware of when covering the beauty at New York Fashion Week. It was there I learned that subtle differences in hair and makeup, such as a middle part versus a side part, communicate entirely different things (thank you, Guido Palau). These decisions also provide details to a character in film and TV, pushing a narrative forward just as much as costumes do.
While watching Mrs. America, I noticed that all the right wing women wore powder blue eyeshadow and to me, there was no way that was just a coincidence. Wanting to explore that led me to launch an Instagram account called The Makeup Trailer. It’s a place where I can discuss and dissect looks from film and TV, and sometimes I’ll track down the lead hair or makeup artist from the project to get the legit intel. I’ve also done a few themed weeks where I invite guests to contribute.
